In 1992, DENR Secretary
Fulgencio S. Factoran, Jr. granted the
Bernie Dizon a 500
square meter-land to establish a demo farm to showcase
high-value exotic fruit trees. Many were skeptical about the
project at that time. Even the park superintendent wondered
if Dizon could do anything right. This is because the soil
is adobe. There is very thin topsoil that is heavy clay

and Wildlife Nature Center Park Supt. Greg
Fabian (2nd from left) before developing in June
1992 at the project site which is waterlogged
barren area with only grass and dead standing
tree. The area is planted yearly with forest
trees but no survival because of thin heavy clay
soil and waterlogged condition

|
|
Year after year, attempts to plant forest trees
did not succeed because they die of waterlogging.
But that did not deter Dizon to show what he
could do. Today, all exotic fruit trees like
durian, lychee, mangosteen, rambutan, lanzones,
Guimaras and imported mangoes, macopa, pummelo,
ponkan, ponkanitas (with very nice small
leaves), longan, variegated chico, and other
exotic fruit trees are now fruiting with
excellent quality fruits.
Because of the project's success, DENR Secretary
Victor O. Ramos granted Dizon additional 2,000 sq.
meters. He also commended Dizon for his excellent
work in showcasing the agro-forestry program of the
government. On September 25, 2002, DENR Secretary
Heherson T. Alvarez granted renewal of the MOA
giving it another 20 years and additional 4,000 sq.
meters, making the project a permanent government
agro-forestry project showcasing high value fruit
trees and a learning center for government
technician and farmers. |

Bernardo Dizon has been granted by the Parks
and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources to have a
space at its nursery at North Avenue, for
his experimental fruit garden for public
exhibition.
Noted for his multiple rootstock techniques,
Dizon has been eased out from his
experimental garden. His
fruit demo farm is the only way to make
farmers have a first hand information on the
modern technology of planting and
propagating fruit trees. Such a novel
undertaking should always be given a change
to prosper. More power to Dizon. |
